Compilation of the Most Effective Pickleball Doubles Strategies for Players

by Ben Pham – CEO, Tango Pickleball Team 20 Oct 2026
A Comprehensive Guide to the Most Effective Pickleball Doubles Strategies for Players

In Pickleball, exceptional individual skill is merely a prerequisite, while seamless doubles strategy is the true key to victory. Unlike singles, doubles play requires synergy, court coverage, and the ability of both players to read the game dynamically.

To help you and your partner increase your win rate in every match, Tango Pickleball has summarized the most essential and easy-to-apply doubles strategies below.

1. Why Are Doubles Strategies the Key to Winning?

Applying the right tactics provides significant advantages on the court:

  • Court coverage: Helps clearly define defensive and offensive zones, eliminating "dead zones" that opponents can exploit.

  • Controlling the pace: Allows the team to easily transition from defense to a rapid offense.

  • Reducing individual pressure: When two players move as a unified block, the mental and physical strain is shared equally.

2. Summary of Core Pickleball Doubles Strategies

2.1 Deep Serves and Targeting Weaknesses

  • Attack the backhand: Most players have a stronger forehand. Continuously targeting the backhand side will limit the opponent's ability to unleash powerful counter-attacks.

  • Serve deep to the baseline: Force opponents to return from a difficult position, hindering their ability to rush the Kitchen (the 7-foot line) quickly.

2.2 Return Serves to the Middle (Center Court)

  • The middle is the lowest part of the net, helping the ball's trajectory stay safe and reducing the risk of errors.

  • Hitting the ball into the gap between two opponents often causes confusion regarding who should take the shot.

2.3 Quickly Occupy the Kitchen (Non-Volley Zone)

  • After the serve return, immediately move up to stand close to the Kitchen line (about 3–5 cm away). The team that controls the net area holds the advantage in dictating the match.

2.4 Drop Shots & Keeping the Ball Low

  • Use the Drop Shot on the third shot to give you and your partner time to transition from the baseline to the net.

  • Always keep the ball flying low over the net so that opponents cannot execute powerful smashes.

2.5 Advanced Stacking & Poaching Strategies

  • Stacking: Allows two players to flexibly change their standing positions during serves/returns to ensure each plays from their preferred side (e.g., the dominant hand is always in the middle).

  • Poaching: One player actively moves across their partner's side of the court to unexpectedly hit a winner when an opening is spotted.

2.6 Aggressive 4th Shot Attack

  • The 4th shot (when your team is at the net and the opponent has just played the 3rd shot) is the golden opportunity to increase power and apply pressure, forcing the opponent back or inducing an error.

3. Teamwork Secrets: Communication and Reading the Play

  • Read the opponent: Observe their movement habits to exploit gaps between them or uncovered corners of the court.

  • Move like a rubber band: You and your partner need to maintain a fixed distance (about 2–3 meters). When one person shifts to the left, the other must shift accordingly to close off the middle.
